For the people who want a more powerful model, there is Westward 4B220 portable air compressor. This machine uses a powerful Briggs engine. Its powered by a powerful 5.5 HP motor. The machine uses a 2 cylinder pump made of cast iron. It has a horizontally placed tank which has a rated capacity of 20 gallons. It uses a four cycle aluminum block engine. The machine has 21 oz engine oil capacity and 12 oz of compressor pump oil. The machine uses a time tested reliable type H tank which makes it one of the longest performing and most reliable machines that you can buy.
Years later, I built a smaller woodworking shop in my home which only required one air sander running at a time. For that shop, I purchased an air compressor half the size and isolated it in a soundproof room in one section of the shop. I ran galvanized pipe under the shop floor to three regulators at three different connection locations. The machine I purchased for that shop as a 5 HP Ingersoll Rand model with an 80 gallon tank. At the 80 PSI required by my Dynabrade sander, the compressor would produce enough air from morning to night. I must say that that compressor was very well built. All I had to do was keep an eye on the oil level in the sight glass. At night, I would turn off the master air valve on the side of the air compressor, leaving the electricity on, to silence the compressor until the next work day.
The most common is the piston compressor. This falls under the positive displacement compressors, which you can find in fractional to very high horsepower ranges. The positive displacement air compressor works by filling an air chamber with air and reducing the chamber volume.
